Assistance for mothers and infants in Sahrawi refugee camps

The Sahrawi people living in Western Sahara territories under Moroccan control and those living in Algerian refugee camps since almost 40 years are in desperate need of external help. Set up in the Sahara Desert, 160 000 people live in camps with little access to drinking water making food self-sufficiency impossible. Medical care is missing or insufficient.
Our project for maternal and infant health aims at improving medical care for pregnant women and those giving birth as well as for new-born babies to reduce life-threatening situations and maternal/infant mortality.
In 2014, Volkshilfe initiated “Raise Your Hand 4 Western Sahara”, a campaign providing information on the Western Sahara conflict. Supporters had the possibility to publish their photos on the website.
