The earthquake in the Turkish-Syrian border region has caused considerable damage to infrastructure, houses and buildings. This has led to the displacement of thousands of people, including people with disabilities who are particularly vulnerable in emergency situations.
This aid project therefore supports people with disabilities and their families in the region around Aleppo and along the coast in the north-west with the following emergency and rehabilitation measures:
- Provision of needs-based and customised relief supplies for the immediate assistance and support of people with disabilities (e.g. medication, baby food, food parcels, hygiene packages, women's needs, clothing, etc.)
- Provision of emergency accommodation
- Provision of mobility aids such as wheelchairs and crutches for people with disabilities who lost their mobility as a result of the earthquake
- Facilitating the rehabilitation of people with disabilities through physiotherapy and training and guidance in the use of mobility aids/assistive devices
- Psychosocial support
- Training of carers, family members and community members in supporting people with disabilities in emergency situations
The project also provides long-term support for the lost economic independence of people with disabilities in their new environment. Income-generating activities that are adapted to the new environment and the needs of the target group are promoted and implemented.The project also provides long-term support for the lost economic independence of people with disabilities in their new environment. The independence and capacity of local NGOs is an important factor for the quantity and quality of services for people with disabilities in the region. This is why Volkshilfe supports the long-standing local partner organisation Al Mostakbal. 30 employees and volunteers receive further training on various administrative topics as well as management and planning courses.
In total, this project supports around 5000 people.
