Emergency Relief

The humanitarian situation in the Middle East continues to deteriorate. In Lebanon, around one million people have been displaced. Together with our local partner, Volkshilfe is providing emergency assistance, including food, clean water and medical care. We are currently supporting people in seven emergency shelters across Beirut.

„Our teams are treating people injured in the attacks and distributing food and medicines. On the very first day of our response, we were able to support 191 families in four emergency shelters,“ reports Kassem Sabbah from Volkshilfe’s partner organisation Mousawat in Beirut.

Hundreds of thousands of people forced to flee the recent attacks are currently living in makeshift shelters, in their cars or on the streets. Schools and public buildings have been opened to accommodate displaced families, yet there is still a severe shortage of shelter, mattresses and blankets.

Health on Wheels programme

Together with Mousawat, Volkshilfe provides 500 families every day with hot meals prepared in school kitchens and distributed in emergency shelters. Hygiene kits, mattresses and blankets are also being provided.

Since 2017, Volkshilfe and Mousawat have been operating a mobile clinic through the Health on Wheels programme. The medical team continues to treat injured people, older persons and patients with chronic illnesses. There is an urgent need for medication for chronic diseases, as well as diapers and infant formula.
