Emergency Relief for Internally Displaced People in North-East Syria

For years, millions of people in Syria have been forced to flee their homes. In north-east Syria alone, hundreds of thousands of internally displaced people (IDPs) are living in extremely precarious conditions, many of them having been displaced multiple times. Together with its local partner organisation, Volkshilfe provides life-saving emergency assistance to those most in need.

Renewed fighting in early 2026 has further worsened the humanitarian situation. Families have once again been forced to flee and are now sheltering in overcrowded schools, mosques and public buildings. Many lack access to food, hygiene supplies, healthcare and any sense of security or stability.

Together with HIRO – Center for Dialogue and Rehabilitation, Volkshilfe is providing emergency assistance in the Qamishli region. The project aims to meet the most urgent basic needs of particularly vulnerable families while also helping to ease the psychological impact of displacement.

What we do

• One-time emergency food assistance for 100 newly displaced families
• Monthly food parcels for 100 families over a period of five months
• Monthly hygiene kits for 100 families over five months
• Monthly multi-purpose cash assistance (MPCA) for 100 families, enabling them to cover their most urgent needs
• Psychosocial support, including group sessions to promote emotional well-being and help people cope with trauma, reaching at least 100 participants

Overall, the project will directly support at least 200 families (around 1,000 people). Additional families in the shelters and surrounding communities will benefit indirectly.
